Opponents - being able to beat them without sinking to their level

La vita è una scuola nella quale siamo venuti a fare un apprendistato, e in questa scuola di fatto ignoriamo chi siano i professori e chi gli alunni. A istruirci, possono essere dei bambini, dei mendicanti, ma anche gli esseri che ci sono ostili… Sì, anche e soprattutto quegli esseri, poiché sono loro che ci costringono a fare gli sforzi maggiori.
Sarebbe così facile a volte rispondere alle calunnie e agli attacchi, ma non tutti i modi di rispondere vanno bene. Chi ribatte, corre sempre il rischio di abbassarsi al livello di coloro che se la prendono con lui, e finisce allora nello stesso pantano.
Non è proibito reagire, ma a condizione che si sia capaci di mantenersi molto in alto e di non uniformarsi ai propri avversari nella meschinità e nella cattiveria; perché in tal caso, anche se in apparenza si riporta la vittoria, in realtà si subiscono anche grosse perdite. Di quanta intelligenza, di quanta forza di carattere è necessario dar prova per tener duro e difendersi senza usare le stesse armi dei propri avversari! E proprio per questo essi sono tanto utili per la nostra evoluzione.

Life is a school we attend to undergo a period of practical training, and in this school we don’t actually know who are teachers and who are pupils. Children and beggars may teach us, but also people who are hostile to us… yes, even and especially those people, as they are the ones who force us to make the most effort. Sometimes it would be quite easy to react to slanders and attacks, but not all ways of reacting are good. Those who answer back always run the risk of sinking to the level of their attackers and getting bogged down in the same mess. It is not wrong to retaliate, so long as you are able to maintain the high ground and not join in your opponents’ pettiness and spitefulness, because even if you apparently win, in reality you also lose a great deal. You have to display much intelligence and strength of character if you are to stand firm and defend yourself without employing the same weapons as your opponents! That is why our opponents are so useful for our evolution.
