A partire da quel momento, egli prova ciò che di bello o di brutto accade agli altri come se stesse accadendo proprio a lui, e si sforza di fare solo del bene, poiché sente, sa, che quel bene lo fa anche a se stesso."

Au existat în istorie niște oameni atât de puternici și bogați încât nimic nu părea că îi poate atinge; dar în colectivitate s-au produs niște tulburări și ei au pierdut totul, chiar și viața. Siguranța indivizilor depinde de buna funcționare a societății. Depinde acum de fiecare să-și înlocuiască punctul de vedere personal printr-un punct de vedere mai vast, mai universal: el va câștiga nu numai în planul material, dar mai ales în planul conștiinței.
Conștiința se trezește cu adevărat în om atunci când el devine sensibil la noțiunea de colectivitate, de universalitate: chiar dacă este în mod fizic o ființă separată, în planul psihic el îi simte pe ceilalți ca o prelungire a lui însuși. Din acea clipă, el resimte ceea ce se întâmplă bun sau rău celorlalți ca și cum i s-ar fi întâmplat lui însuși, și se străduiește să le facă numai bine, pentru că simte, știe că își face și lui acel bine."
